Our Commitment To

Responsible, Fair, And Sustainable Mining In Sri Lanka

The true value of our creations lies not only in the quality of the gems we use, but also in our steadfast commitment to the well-being and working conditions of the people who extract them, and in our profound respect for the natural wealth of Sri Lanka, which so deeply inspires us.

Sri Lanka has a millennia-old tradition of gemstone mining and trade. As early as 300 B.C., chronicles mentioned the existence of a place beyond Persia, regarded as a gem paradise. Marco Polo, in the accounts of his travels, spoke of the extraordinary quality, variety, and beauty of the precious stones extracted from the island, then known as Ceylon.

Gemstone mining is not only a key economic activity for Sri Lanka but also an essential part of the island’s culture. The people are well aware of the importance of preserving these valuable natural resources, which are unique in the world. This awareness has led the country to become a leader in responsible, ethical, and sustainable mining.

Sri Lanka is a pioneer in implementing stringent regulations that ensure not only environmental protection and workers’ rights (including a prohibition on child labor), but also the maintenance of gem quality standards and the preservation of ancient crafts such as goldsmithing and gem cutting. This policy also promotes the local artisanal industry.

The small scale of most mining operations has been crucial to the success of responsible and sustainable mining in Sri Lanka. These operations are often small family-owned properties or companies, frequently operating as cooperatives where workers share in the profits and, in some cases, even hold co-ownership. This ensures that the added value remains in the country and directly benefits local communities.

This artisanal micro-mining system has also been vital in preserving traditional mining practices, passed down from generation to generation over centuries.

In Sri Lanka, it is common for farmers to also work as miners or to share the use of their land with mine owners, alternating between agriculture and mining. This unique productive approach not only encourages more sustainable land use but also provides additional economic security for many local families, contributing to environmental preservation and the economic well-being of the community.

Every OONA piece is handcrafted by local master goldsmiths. We only work with ethically sourced natural gemstones, extracted from responsible, fair, and sustainable mines. Our gems are cut, polished, and traded by the island’s artisans and producers.

“For me, it is important to personally visit the mines where we source our gems and ensure that all workers have proper working conditions. We purchase the gemstones directly from trusted miners, allowing us to guarantee that each gem meets our ethical and quality standards. Additionally, we have launched a program to provide support aimed at improving the working conditions of these small mining communities, thereby giving back to Sri Lanka some of the beauty it bestows upon us and ensuring that we offer conflict-free gems.”
